KLIA Transit vs KLIA Ekspres: What’s The Difference?

If you’re flying into Kuala Lumpur, you’ve probably seen both KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit listed as train options to the city. They use the same line, similar trains, and even the same price for a full airport–KL Sentral trip… so what’s the actual difference, and which should you take?

This article breaks it all down in plain language so you don’t overpay, miss your flight, or drag your luggage around more than you have to.

The Big picture In A Glance

Both services are run by Express Rail Link (ERL) and connect KLIA / KLIA2 ↔ KL Sentral on the same 57 km airport rail line.

The core difference:

  • KLIA Ekspresnon-stop, airport express train between KL Sentral ↔ KLIA / KLIA2.
  • KLIA Transitstops at 3 intermediate stations: Bandar Tasik Selatan, Putrajaya & Cyberjaya, and Salak Tinggi.

So you’re choosing between speed vs flexibility, not “cheap vs expensive” (for the full city-airport run they’re actually the same fare).

What is KLIA Ekspres?

Think of KLIA Ekspres as the “airport limo” version of the train.

  • Route: KL Sentral ↔ KLIA T1 ↔ KLIA T2, non-stop between city and airport.
  • Journey time:
    • 28 minutes between KL Sentral ↔ KLIA T1
    • 33 minutes between KL Sentral ↔ KLIA T2
  • Top speed: Up to 160 km/h.
  • Standard fare (adult):
    • RM55 one-way, RM100 return between KL Sentral and either airport terminal. Kids 6–15 pay RM25 one-way / RM45 return; under 6 travel free.
  • Train frequency: Roughly every 15–20 minutes depending on time of day (check the latest schedule before you travel).

You’re also able to get:

  • 10% off when you buy online via the KLIA Ekspres app or website.
  • Group Saver: from RM40 per person one-way if 3 or more of you travel together (KL Sentral–KLIA/2 sector).
  • EkspreSmiles loyalty points when you book through their channels.

When KLIA Ekspres makes sense for you

  • You want the fastest, most predictable ride from airport to city.
  • You’re catching a flight and don’t want to gamble with KL traffic.
  • You’ve got big luggage and prefer a smooth, non-stop journey.
  • You’re in a group of 3+ and can use the Group Saver fare (RM40 each is a pretty decent deal vs taxi).

What is KLIA Transit?

KLIA Transit is the “commuter” version of the same line. Same train type, similar comfort, but it stops along the way.

  • Route & stops:
    • KL Sentral → Bandar Tasik Selatan → Putrajaya & Cyberjaya → Salak Tinggi → KLIA T1 → KLIA T2.
  • Journey time:
    • Around 35 minutes between KL Sentral ↔ KLIA T1
    • Around 39–40 minutes to KLIA T2 (including the KLIA T1 stop).
  • Full-stretch fare (KL Sentral ↔ KLIA / KLIA2):
    • Also RM55 one-way for adults, same as KLIA Ekspres.

The big difference is that with Transit, you can also start or end at the intermediate stations, at much lower fares:

Sample adult fares on KLIA Transit:

  • Bandar Tasik Selatan ↔ KLIA / KLIA2: RM25
  • Putrajaya & Cyberjaya ↔ KLIA / KLIA2: RM9.40
  • Putrajaya & Cyberjaya ↔ KL Sentral: RM14
  • Salak Tinggi ↔ KLIA / KLIA2: RM4.20

There are also weekly and monthly TravelCards for frequent commuters between these stations.

When KLIA Transit makes sense for you

  • You’re staying near Bandar Tasik Selatan, Cheras, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, or Salak Tinggi.
  • You’re connecting from MRT / LRT / KTM via Bandar Tasik Selatan transport hub.
  • You’re a regular commuter to the airport and can use TravelCards to save monthly.
  • You don’t mind an extra 7-10 minutes of train time in exchange for flexibility.

Here Comes The Confusing Part

If you’re going all the way from KL Sentral ↔ KLIA / KLIA2, both KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit cost RM55 for a standard adult one-way ticket. So how do you decide which one to tap into?

1. Journey time

  • KLIA Ekspres: ~28–33 minutes, no stops.
  • KLIA Transit: ~35–39 minutes, with quick station stops.

Difference: around 7–10 minutes. Not huge, but if you’re cutting it close for check-in, it matters.

2. Who they’re designed for

  • KLIA Ekspres: Mostly airport passengers going directly between city and airport.
  • KLIA Transit: Mix of airport passengers and daily commuters living or working along the line.

3. Flexibility & connections

  • KLIA Transit gives you easy links to:
    • Bandar Tasik Selatan → major interchange for LRT, KTM Komuter, and intercity buses.
    • Putrajaya & Cyberjaya → government offices, tech parks, newer townships.

If you’re not staying near KL Sentral, it can actually be more convenient (and cheaper overall) to use Transit from one of these hubs.

Which Should You Choose?

Let’s make it super practical.

Take KLIA Ekspres if:

  • Your flight is soon and you want the fastest, least stressful option.
  • You’re staying around KL Sentral / Brickfields / Bangsar / KL Eco City, or you have an easy MRT/LRT ride into KL Sentral.
  • You’re travelling with family or friends and can make use of the Group Saver to bring the price down to RM40 per person.
  • You just got off a long-haul flight and want to sit quietly with your luggage without stops.

Take KLIA Transit if:

  • You’re staying in Putrajaya / Cyberjaya or nearby townships.
  • You want to connect with MRT/LRT/KTM at Bandar Tasik Selatan instead of KL Sentral.
  • You’re watching your budget and are okay with a slightly longer ride but shorter/cheaper taxi or e-hailing once you get off.
  • You’re a frequent flyer or airport worker and can use TravelCards to save on monthly fares.

Money-saving Tricks For You

If you’re the kind of person who loves optimising every ringgit, here are some ways to stretch your airport train budget.

1. Book Online For The 10% Discount

Whether you take Ekspres or Transit, buying via the KLIA Ekspres app or website usually gets you about 10% off standard fares.

That brings the RM55 one-way down to roughly RM49.50, which is already closer to airport bus pricing — with a lot more comfort and reliability.

2. Use Group Saver If You’re 3 or More

For KLIA Ekspres, Group Saver fares start at RM40 per person one-way when 3+ people travel together between KL Sentral ↔ KLIA / KLIA2. That’s RM15 cheaper per person than buying solo, and can beat many taxi fares, especially during peak or surge times.

Great for:

  • Girl trips
  • Family holiday groups
  • Colleagues flying in or out together

3. Use KLIA Transit From Intermediate Stations

If you’re staying outside the city centre, using KLIA Transit from Putrajaya or Bandar Tasik Selatan can be much cheaper than going all the way to KL Sentral first.

For example:

  • Putrajaya & Cyberjaya ↔ KLIA / KLIA2: RM9.40
  • Putrajaya & Cyberjaya ↔ KL Sentral: RM14

Even if you use an MRT/LRT or short Grab ride to get there, the total often comes out lower than a taxi straight from the airport.

Some travellers even split their journey using KLIA Transit with two tickets (e.g. Airport → Putrajaya; Putrajaya → KL Sentral) to save vs the flat RM55 fare, though this comes with extra train changes and wait time, so it’s better suited if you’re not in a rush and travelling light.

4. Check For Seasonal Promos

ERL regularly runs promos like:

  • Corporate or BusinessPass discounts
  • Event tie-ins and travel fair deals
  • EkspreSmiles bonus points for members

If you’re a frequent traveller, it’s worth skimming their Offers and News & Events pages now and then.

How KLIA Transit & KLIA Ekspres Compare To Taxis, Grab, and Buses?

A quick reality check for your wallet:

  • Taxi / Grab: Typically RM65 – RM120+ to/from central KL depending on traffic, time of day, and surge pricing. Good if you’re in a group and want door-to-door.
  • Airport buses: Around RM15RM20 one-way to KL Sentral, but expect ~1 hour or more in traffic.
  • KLIA Ekspres / Transit: RM55 full stretch, 2840 minutes travel time, and no traffic stress.

So trains are not the absolute cheapest, but they’re often the sweet spot between cost, comfort, and reliability, especially if you book online or travel in a group.

Additional Information You Should Know

  • KL Sentral layout: KLIA Ekspres / Transit departures are from the dedicated KLIA Ekspres station inside KL Sentral (follow the purple signage).
  • Terminals: Both trains serve KLIA T1 and T2. You can ride between T1 ↔ T2 in about 3 minutes on the same line if you board the right train.
  • Luggage: There are dedicated luggage racks near doors and at carriage ends, super handy if you’re hauling big suitcases.
  • Kids: Children under 6 travel free on both services, and 6-15 enjoy reduced fares.
  • Tickets: You can tap in with QR codes from your phone, physical tickets from kiosks, or buy at the counter. No need to print if your QR code scans fine.

TL;DR: Which is Better?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all winner, just the better train for your situation:

  • Pick KLIA Ekspres if you want speed, simplicity, and zero stops between city and airport.
  • Pick KLIA Transit if you need flexible stops at Bandar Tasik Selatan, Putrajaya & Cyberjaya, or Salak Tinggi, or you’re planning a clever route with cheaper intermediate fares.

Either way, you’re getting a clean, air-conditioned, rail-fast ride that skips KL’s legendary traffic — and if you time your promos right, you’ll arrive in the city with more time and more money left in your pocket.
